Narrative (Synopsis):
“In its 1991 Tourisms: Suitcase Studies installation at the Walker Art Center, in Minneapolis, the design studio Diller + Scofidio broke the boundaries between art, architecture, and design and explored the relationships between bodies, geographies, histories, and technologies. Taking inspiration from this playful, yet powerful approach, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) asked contributors to its 2018 Fall Conference to propose designs that manifested at the scale of a carry-on suitcase.” Organized and curated by Prof. Alberto de Salvatierra from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Architecture—with the assistance of Oscar Delgado—and the Priscilla Fowler Fine Art Gallery, The Portmanteau Exhibit: Play with the Rules was first curated at the Milwaukee Art Museum by Jasmine Benyamin, Nikole Bouchard, Whitney Moon, Kyle Reynolds, and Mo Zell from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) School of Architecture & Urban Planning.
The thirteen examples on display exemplify a range of responses, which can be further distilled into three topics:
