Narrative (Synopsis):

This fall (October 19-21, 2018) the UNLV School of Architecture co-hosted the Las Vegas Make-A-Thon, a new and free event open to all UNLV students organized by the Las Vegas Hub of the Global Shapers, an initiative of the World Economic Forum.

Assembling mentors from Harvard, MIT, and Cornell, along with young entrepreneurs from the East and West Coasts (and here in Las Vegas), this was an interdisciplinary experience bringing together art, architecture, business, design, engineering, entrepreneurship and hospitality students to hack, make and create innovative solutions using programming and rapid prototyping techniques featuring arduino. All making was done in an open and collaborative studio environment to incubate creative ideas. This year, the theme was the future of food along three tracks: food + health, food + hospitality, and food + data/A.I. 

This was a collaborative campus endeavor between the UNLV School of Architecture, the Department of Art at the UNLV College of Fine Arts, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the UNLV Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering, the MBA Programs at the UNLV Lee Business School, the UNLV Architecture Studies Library, and the William F. Harrah College of Hospitality. The event also had support from at-LAS, Culinairy Labs, EM Labs, Startup Tree, PROXIIMA, Neighbors Cafe, International Marketplace, Sin City Cupcakes, WAKU Herbal Tea, the UNLV Epicurean Society and AIAS Las Vegas.

In short, the event was a weekend of excellent programming built on interdisciplinary learning where student participants were connected to a rich array of resources while positioning UNLV as a fertile laboratory capable of producing viable solutions for the benefit of humanity, both local and global, in an age marked with scarcity, uncertainty, and growth.
